AVIF is a modern image format that makes smaller files than JPEG at the same quality, and it is used by websites, cameras and phone apps. Like JPEG, it can carry an Exif block with the camera, the date and the GPS position, plus XMP written by editors. An AVIF metadata remover deletes those blocks and leaves the compressed picture untouched, so the image is not re-encoded and loses no quality. Drop an .avif file in the box above to see what it holds and download a clean copy.
What an AVIF image remembers
| Where | What is stored | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Exif | Make, model, lens, exposure, date and time taken, software | Canon EOS R6, taken 2025-03-02 08:41 |
| GPS | Latitude, longitude, altitude and direction | 51.5007 N, 0.1246 W: the street the photo was taken on |
| XMP | Properties written by editing programs | Creator tool, edit history, author |
| Other blocks | Comments and app-specific boxes | Notes added by an editor |
Where the details come from
- Cameras and phones that save AVIF write the position and the camera.
- Converters copy the Exif of the source JPEG or HEIC into the new file.
- Editing programs add the software name and the edit history.
What the remover deletes, and what it keeps
| Removed | Kept |
|---|---|
| GPS position, altitude and direction | The compressed image, untouched and not re-encoded |
| Make, model, lens and software | The colour profile, so colours look the same |
| Date and time taken | The rotation stored in the container |
| XMP and other metadata blocks | Pixel size and bit depth |
How to remove metadata from an AVIF image
- Drop your AVIF images in the box at the top of the page, or choose them from your device. You can add many files at once.
- Press the clean button. Each file shows what was found and removed.
- Read the report. Anything that could still identify someone is listed as remaining, so nothing is hidden from you.
- Download the clean copy. It is deleted from our server within minutes.
Is it safe to clean an AVIF image online?
AVIF images are cleaned on our server, because the work needs a dedicated media tool. The file is held only while it is cleaned and for a few minutes after, so that you can download it, then it is deleted. It is never listed, indexed or shared, and the download link is a secret that only you receive.
Frequently asked questions
Does cleaning an AVIF reduce its quality?
No. The picture data is not decoded or encoded again. Only the metadata around it is removed, and we checked that the decoded pixels of a cleaned file are identical to the original.
Will the image still open everywhere?
Yes. The file stays a valid AVIF with the same colour profile and size.
Does it work on animated AVIF?
Yes, the metadata is removed from the container and the frames are not touched.
Can I convert AVIF to JPEG here?
No. This tool only removes metadata. Convert first with an image converter, then clean the result with the image remover.
Can I clean AVIF images with the API?
Yes. Send the file to POST /api/v1/clean/photo with your API key and its name in the X-Filename header. It returns the clean file and reports what was removed in the response headers. The MCP server does the same for AI assistants.
How many files can I clean?
Guests and free accounts have a daily allowance and a file-size limit, shown above the drop box. Paid plans raise both. Documents, images, PDFs and audio share one daily allowance.
