An MP3 file is two things: the compressed sound, and tags around it. The tags, called ID3, hold the title, artist, album, year, genre, track number, a free comment, the name of the encoder and often a cover picture. Recorded files and downloaded files carry the app or site that made them. An MP3 metadata remover deletes the tags and copies the sound frames unchanged, so quality is identical. Drop an .mp3 file in the box above to see what it holds.
What an MP3 file remembers
| Where | What is stored | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ID3v2 (start of file) | Title, artist, album, year, genre, track, comment, lyrics, cover picture, encoder | Artist “Jane Doe”, comment “recorded at home” |
| ID3v1 (end of file) | A fixed 128-byte block with title, artist, album, year, comment | The same fields, shortened |
| Encoder frames | The name and version of the encoder, and a Xing or LAME header | LAME 3.100 |
| Cover art | An attached JPEG or PNG | A 1,000-pixel album cover |
Where the details come from
- Players and rippers write the tags from online databases.
- Recording apps write their name and the time.
- Download sites add their own name in the comment.
- Editors record the encoder.
What the remover deletes, and what it keeps
| Removed | Kept |
|---|---|
| ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags | The audio frames, bit for bit |
| Title, artist, album, year, genre, track number, comment | Bit rate, sample rate and channels |
| Cover art and other pictures | Length |
| Encoder and software tags |
How to remove metadata from an MP3 file
- Drop your MP3 files in the box at the top of the page, or choose them from your device. You can add many files at once.
- Press the clean button. Each file shows what was found and removed.
- Read the report. Anything that could still identify someone is listed as remaining, so nothing is hidden from you.
- Download the clean copy. It is deleted from our server within minutes.
Is it safe to clean an MP3 file online?
MP3 files are cleaned on our server, because the work needs a dedicated media tool. The file is held only while it is cleaned and for a few minutes after, so that you can download it, then it is deleted. It is never listed, indexed or shared, and the download link is a secret that only you receive.
Frequently asked questions
Does cleaning an MP3 reduce quality?
No. The audio frames are copied, not decoded or encoded again.
Will my player show the song name?
It will play normally but show no title or artist, because those tags are removed. Players then show the file name.
Does it remove the cover art?
Yes. The picture is usually the biggest part of the tags.
Can I clean MP3 files with the API?
Yes. Send the file to POST /api/v1/clean/audio with your API key and its name in the X-Filename header. It returns the clean file and reports what was removed in the response headers. The MCP server does the same for AI assistants.
How many files can I clean?
Guests and free accounts have a daily allowance and a file-size limit, shown above the drop box. Paid plans raise both. Documents, images, PDFs and audio share one daily allowance.
