Frequently asked questions
- How does a photo know where it was taken?
- Phones and some cameras write the GPS position into the photo’s EXIF block when location is turned on for the camera. The coordinates are accurate to a few metres.
- Is the photo uploaded?
- No. The file is read and rewritten in your browser. Only if you press “See it on a map” do the coordinates go to OpenStreetMap, in a new tab.
- What is the difference between the two buttons?
- “Remove only the location” keeps the author, copyright, description, camera, software, date and rotation. “Remove all metadata” deletes everything and leaves only the picture.
- Does a missing location mean the photo is safe?
- Not entirely. The camera, the date, and what the picture shows can still identify a place or a person. Check the full list in the EXIF Viewer.
- Which formats work?
- JPEG here. For HEIC, PNG, WebP or RAW use the matching metadata remover.
