M4A is the MP4 container used for AAC audio: iTunes purchases, podcast downloads and the voice memos of phones. Its tags live in metadata atoms and can hold the title, artist, album, cover art, the creation date and, for recordings, the device or app that made them. An M4A metadata remover deletes those atoms and copies the audio stream unchanged. Drop an .m4a file in the box above to see what it holds.
What an M4A file remembers
| Where | What is stored | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Metadata atoms | Title, artist, album, genre, year, comment, track | Title “Meeting with Sam” |
| Cover art | An attached picture | An album or podcast cover |
| Dates | Creation and modification time of the file and tracks | Recorded 2025-03-02 08:41 |
| Encoder and device | The software and sometimes the device | “Lavf” or a recorder name |
Where the details come from
- Voice memo apps name the recording after the time or place.
- iTunes and Music add the purchase tags.
- Podcast tools write the show and episode.
- Encoders record their name.
What the remover deletes, and what it keeps
| Removed | Kept |
|---|---|
| Metadata atoms: title, artist, album, genre, year, comment | The AAC audio stream, bit for bit |
| Cover art | Sample rate, bit rate and channels |
| Dates stored in the tags | Length |
| Encoder tags |
How to remove metadata from an M4A file
- Drop your M4A files in the box at the top of the page, or choose them from your device. You can add many files at once.
- Press the clean button. Each file shows what was found and removed.
- Read the report. Anything that could still identify someone is listed as remaining, so nothing is hidden from you.
- Download the clean copy. It is deleted from our server within minutes.
Is it safe to clean an M4A file online?
M4A files are cleaned on our server, because the work needs a dedicated media tool. The file is held only while it is cleaned and for a few minutes after, so that you can download it, then it is deleted. It is never listed, indexed or shared, and the download link is a secret that only you receive.
Frequently asked questions
Can I clean iPhone voice memos?
Yes. Voice memos are M4A files. The title, date and device tags are removed.
Does it handle .aac files?
Yes, raw AAC (ADTS) files are supported too.
A “handler” name remains, is that a problem?
No. Containers carry generic names such as “Apple” for the sound handler. They do not identify a person or a device.
Can I clean M4A files with the API?
Yes. Send the file to POST /api/v1/clean/audio with your API key and its name in the X-Filename header. It returns the clean file and reports what was removed in the response headers. The MCP server does the same for AI assistants.
How many files can I clean?
Guests and free accounts have a daily allowance and a file-size limit, shown above the drop box. Paid plans raise both. Documents, images, PDFs and audio share one daily allowance.
